This was extremely helpful to me, i have been doing a practice essay for my geography Gcse's on Wind turbines and this gave me all the information i needed to complete my planning. finding this was like being given hot chocolate in the snow! thankyou so much it was brilliant i read it all :D

Its a good example of where short term government gets in the way of the right answer - and then business finds a way to meet the rules. Doesn't lead to what was intended at all, just ticks the boxes!

It seems dissapointly difficult to find a suitable site with sufficient space to install a turbine. I'm all for small-scale generation, but who has the luxury of 3 years to assess wind conditions on a new ddvelopment site. Surely it would be better to leave generation to the experts. It is possible to claim significantly more than 10% renewables power supply in this way. For example Ecotricity generate 50% of their supplied energy from renewable green sources.

Fascinating, in 1975 I was lectured about the advantage of every house having it's own generation because of the 14% distribution losses of the National Grid. Back then generation was envisaged as steam turbines because oil was plentiful & no one had thought of Global Warming!

Very well put and analyzed. Su. You described very well my own experience and trouble with a 7.5kWe turbine, producing about 500kWe/year; an output I would be better to generate by sitting on a bicycle while getting a workout. The even worse difference is the fact that our 13m cast iron turbine mast is grounded into 70 tons of concrete - which we had to do twice as an "expert" advised that the second location would boost its production of electricity.

Well, it did boost the footprint, kill any sustainability and delayed efficiency into 2109, or close to it.

Indeed, renewables' evaluation - as anything else - requires looking at the complete picture and thinking things trough in their entirety.
