The Plain Language Group (PLG) is an independent advocacy group dedicated to broadening and improving the understanding and use of digitisation in the construction industry.
We do this by
- Engaging with industry about their concerns and level of understanding.
- Researching industry views to facilitate a better understanding of the challenge.
- Publishing independent plain language articles, guides and information.
- Sharing our knowledge and that of our peers with the industry online and in person.
- Supporting manufacturers, construction professionals and policymakers to understand the challenge of digitisation and make informed decisions to enable for a digitised construction supply chain.
Who is the PLG?

The group emerged from a working group of the UK BIM Alliance in 2018 and was also part of the Built Environment Expert Panel of The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
The group is:
- Rick Hartwig, former Built Environment Lead, IET.
- Paul Surin, Head of Digital and IT at TROJENA
- Patricia Massey, Digital and Technology Manager, BEAMA
- Su Butcher, Director, Just Practising Limited
Supporters of our Independence
Digitisation is a new field for construction and as a result companies can be vulnerable to poor advice and even exploitation. The PLG is an independent group which works to surface and produce information free from commercial influence, so that manufacturers and other construction professionals can make informed decisions.
We are grateful for the support of larger independent organisations that over the years continue to help us maintain independence by publishing our work, hosting our events and inviting us to speak to their members.
These include:
- BEAMA
- Construction Products Europe
- Construction Leadership Council (CLC)
- Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS)
- Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
- UK BIM Alliance (UKBIMA – now nima)
