The Plain Language Group and its members have authored several papers and guides to support our objectives of broadening and improving the understanding and use of digitisation in the construction industry, especially but not exclusively in the field of construction product manufacturing.
Below is a list of key documents, with the most recent at the top. If you have any questions about the documents you can get in touch with us by emailing plg@justpractising.com.
NEW: Digitisation of Construction Product Manufacturers: A report of research into senior managers’ views
The Construction Leadership Council has published our research which canvassed the views of 80 senior managers who supply products into the UK construction supply chain.
Richard Robinson, President, UK & Ireland at Atkins Réalis said,
More Information“80 per cent of the 80 manufacturer leaders interviewed for this research understood the importance of digitisation, however only a few placed digital highly in their priorities, well behind other pressing concerns. We also found that digital transformation journeys are fragmented, and our investment into digital is sometimes misplaced due to a poor understanding of what is possible and what it means to digitalise. I urge you to read this report and consider how it can influence your policy decisions.”
Industry Voices: Why won’t the Built Environment Sector Modernise?
This event looked at the challenges, opportunities and ways forward in three key areas that present major difficulties to the built environment:

More InformationDigitisation for Construction Product Manufacturers: A Plain Language Guide
Manufacturers of construction products produce a significant part of the information required to bring about a safer construction industry, but currently, this information isn’t structured or shared in a consistent way.
This guide explains how manufacturers can structure and share data safely and sustainably, and how to move forward even before you work with third parties.
Alongside the full guide there is also an eight-page summary and a two-page digest available, focusing on key messages and recommendations.

More InformationA Fresh Way Forward for Product Data: State of the Nation
This report set out the situation with regard to the digitisation of product information in the built environment sector. It was compiled after a six month consultation run by a working group of the UK BIM Alliance (now nima).
Product information – the information about products, assemblies and systems within our buildings and assets – is a key component of the information we need to digitise to gain the benefits of truly collaborative and efficient digital built environment. Products make up a major part of the information we share, and to gain genuine efficiencies we need to ensure we share it in an effective way that reduces waste and risk.
“…a document that has been absolutely vital in clarifying the way forward for product manufacturers and their data.”
