At this time of uncertainty many construction companies are realising how important it is to keep in touch with their audiences, both internal and external. This is because:
- Employers need to keep their employees updated
- Manufacturers need to help their customers and specifiers keep up with current events
- Construction companies need to share information about their activities
- Architects need to support their staff working from home
- Everyone needs to demonstrate ‘we are still here, and we are helping’.
Over the last two weeks I have been approached by several of my clients to support them in their crisis communications by hosting webinars and internal calls.
Here are a few key tips on how to host a construction webinar:
- Use the correct software: Dedicated webinar software is designed to allow you to manage the level of interaction with your audience, even with a large audience. It also includes calendar integrations, will send reminders and can measure audience participation.
- Promote it well in advance: Use all your communication assets to help promote the webinar to your target audience, either public or private. How do you usually communicate with this audience? Don’t forget to use all the appropriate channels.
- Have a separate organiser: The presenter and/or panellists need to be able to focus on giving their presentation and answering questions. Having a separate webinar organiser allows you to concentrate on what you do best and leave the rest to the host.
There are two main types of construction webinar you might want to run – external and internal
External Construction Webinar
For when you want to present to either a public audience (via signup link) or a carefully selected audience (shareholders, key customers etc)
- Present to up to 1000 participants
- Educate your audience – deliver your RIBA Certified CPD or a briefing on the latest news, for example
- Run polls to the audience and provide documents to download
- Manage questions from the audience using a hidden Q&A system where only you and the host can see the questions
- Obtain full reporting and analytics including engagement statistics
Internal Construction Webinar
For when you have a group of employees distributed round the country, working from home, on maternity leave or under self-isolation or social distancing rules.
- Registration via a private link or calendar invitation
- Update your team on the latest news
- Provide Training:
- EHS Training to your teams working from home
- Presentation training to a construction webinar audience (eg in preparation for online CPD)
- LinkedIn Training for staff to update their profiles and support their networking during the lockdown
- Run polls and provide documents to download
- Manage questions from the audience using a hidden Q&A system where only you and the host can see the questions
- Obtain full reporting and analytics including engagement statistics.
Why use an experienced construction webinar host? Peace of Mind
You might be thinking that you could host a webinar yourself, but that requires you to find the time to set up the webinar, master the platform and deal with any issues before, during and afterwards.
With an independent, experienced webinar host you can concentrate on the message you want to deliver, prepare your slides, talk and training, and let us handle the rest.
We’ve been running some of these events and they have been very successful.
Maybe we could run some for your company?
Su is an experienced speaker and conference chair, confident in the use of webinar software and ready to help you ‘out of the box’.
If you want to provide training, you can use internal staff (eg your EHS specialist) to deliver it, or get us to provide online LinkedIN or presentation training for your staff to prepare for delivering webinar talks or CPD seminars.

It’s an unprecedented time for most of us working in trades but this is a good way to keep all employees in the loop and get some training done at the same time, so thank you. This type of conferencing might also be something more companies adopt once everything is back to normal, which would be interesting to see.

Thanks for the comment, James.
Those who are using online tools to deliver events like CPD Seminars online are finding it is considerably more cost effective and gives them the opportunity to reach a much wider audience – small practices, for example.
If you imaging the petrol costs and travel time involved in travelling to an architects’ office, it isn’t surprising that many manufacturers resist delivering CPDs to small architects’ firms. Yet the vast majority of architects’ practices are fewer than 10 staff.
Whilst there is no substitute for face-to-face, online webinars can form another route towards in person meetings. That’s certainly the message I’m getting from my clients.
