I’m delighted that the Lighthouse, Glasgow, home of Architecture + Design Scotland, will be hosting our Linkedin Training Workshop next week. The Lighthouse is a great venue, right in the middle of town, and if you’re coming you’ll be able to check out the Mackintosh Interpretation Centre (by Gareth Hoskins Architects) and Foundation Glasgow, as well as picking up some lunch in the café before we start.
Design Skills Symposium 2012
Having a chat with Diarmaid Lawlor, Head of Urbanism at A+DS, I also found out that they are running a two day event in Ayr in October, a Design Skills Symposium. The symposium is an annual event, this year it is all about briefing for better buildings and places.
The symposium is a learning event using a live site context, so it will be of particular interest if you favour a collaborative, user oriented approach to briefing for development and regeneration.
The organisers say,
“By the end of the Symposium, participants should be able to:
- Understand the process of user-oriented briefing for buildings and places
- Translate user needs into design principles for decision-making
- Test design principles through spatial scenarios
- Evaluate spatial options relative to user needs, design principles and implementation
- Appreciate the value of design thinking in catalysing the ‘art of the possible’ in the briefing process.”
Speakers include:
Rogier van der Berg from the Academy of Architecture, Amsterdam
Conor Moloney from Urban Initiatives
Indy Johar from 00
Find out more about the symposium on their dedicated website, or book here.
Architecture+Design Scotland have a twitter account where they are sharing questions about the process of briefing. Take a look at A+DS’s twitter feed or follow the #designskillsscotland2012 hashtag.

There are some nice tools on my YouTube site that assists design. I believe even the image you show for your symposium reveals the problemo.
Talibad. US and England raged on Afghanistan because a hierarchy of the Talibud exists(Teacher is translation of Talibad). So, there you are wanting to be heard and seen as the Talibad. Just think how many times people say: I went to so and so and my Prof said da-da and that makes me important. How about the PhD concept. PhD walks about claiming to be a doctor of society. Ha-ha, Talibud. So, where are the ramparts outside your place being missiled by US and British forces.
Its a valid issue to confront because a world of barking dogs is useless. But Kings and queens and presidents of tyranies have that need. Some dream of being an architect or a Jesus Christ or Mohamed or yaweh or Sun God. But they fail not knowing peoples need to socialize.
MIT used to teach that by social interface design, but post becoming a black led school its become a Man needing to be a plantation owner at his table demanding you see his sketch and “meaning”. Farce. US and England call that Equal Opportunity. Laughter and one UK prince dreamed of going to Black Man Land: MIT Talibud. Funny, but real.
I downloaded the school prior to Black Man and provide insightful texts on design for interests. I had hoped to just sell and make work for myself. Today, its just an offer to see design versus tyrany.

Kiernan (oh, I have a scottish name. US calls me Irish. I doubt I am either. But, alas, the point. An awry Talibud: EEO black man and white supporters.
